Wooden rings, solid or laminated

A basic distinction is made between solid-wood and laminated-wood rings. The advantages of solid-wood rings lie in their stability and pure naturalness.

STEAM-BENT WOODEN RINGS

We use steam bending to produce large and small solid-wood rings on our two round bending machines in Felsenau. These special bending machines are also known as winding machines. A solid-wood ring is created either by overlapping a long wooden strip to form a circle and then joining it diagonally, or by joining two half-circles together.

Solid-wood rings are traditionally used as seat frames for round or oval chairs, or as table edges. We are also increasingly using solid-wood rings for round windows/portholes or as window linings. They also make beautiful features as mirror frames, in lighting, in instruments and much more.

As the designers’ ideas are unlimited, new applications are constantly being found. We are currently working on solid-wood rings for designer lamps. Architects often use solid ring segments as skirting boards for columns or curved walls.

Laminated-wood rings

Hoops, rings and shells are made of laminated wood in various radii and cross-sections. The advantages of laminated-wood rings lie on the one hand in their high dimensional accuracy and on the other hand in their dimensional stability.

Producing laminated-wood rings is highly efficient and cost-effective from a certain quantity. Plywood is the best choice for large, curved panelling.

Drums made of bentwood

In drum making, acoustics and stability are what matter most. Each drum also has its own characteristic design. The best drum makers in Switzerland rely on the quality of our drum rings.

Technical specifications for bentwood

Bending radii The smallest possible radius is 25 mm
Max. length 4,500 mm
Max. width Normal 320 mm. Widths of up to 500 mm are possible on request.
Wood types

Any type of wood is possible in theory. Particularly suitable for small radii: walnut, ash, elm, beech, oak, service tree, cherry.
